Comprehensive Renovation and Upgrade of the Informatika d.o.o. Data Center
About Informatika d.o.o.
Informatika d.o.o. is a leading Slovenian ICT company specializing in the energy sector and critical infrastructure. For more than 40 years, the company has been developing, operating and protecting key information systems within Slovenia’s power and energy sector while supporting the ongoing digital transformation of the industry.
Challenge: Maintaining Continuous Data Center Operations
The primary challenge of the project was the renovation of an existing live data center environment. Key challenges included:
- Continuous operation: Data services had to remain fully operational throughout the entire renovation process, with no service interruptions for customers.
- Incomplete documentation: Existing documentation of cabling routes and building infrastructure was limited, making the design of new pathways more complex.
- Fixed migration window: The project team had only one pre-defined weekend available for the critical migration of equipment into the new cabinets. Any delay would have postponed the project by several months.
Goal: Tier III Readiness and AI Preparedness
Informatika d.o.o. defined clear strategic objectives that extended beyond a simple equipment replacement:
- Tier III readiness: Achieve high availability with a maximum annual downtime of 1.6 hours through full redundancy of power, cooling and connectivity systems. This corresponds to 99.982% availability and concurrent maintainability.
- Optimization and efficiency: Reduce energy consumption through improved cooling and monitoring.
- Future readiness: Prepare the infrastructure to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads, including high power densities of up to 100 kW per cabinet and ultra-high-speed connectivity of 800G and beyond.
Solution: Redundant and Modular Data Center Infrastructure for Tier III Availability
The project was based on the implementation of a modular Panduit infrastructure incorporating intelligent PDUs for power monitoring, high-performance fiber optic and copper connectivity, PatchRunner cable management systems, and redundant power and communication pathways.
This architecture provides a high level of availability, simplified infrastructure management, and support for future data center requirements, including AI workloads, increased processing demands, and next-generation networking technologies.
Added Value
Expertise in Redundancy Planning
The EGAL team participated in the design of redundant power and communication paths and in the assessment of the existing building infrastructure, where documentation was incomplete. Using specialized tools, existing cable routes and power feeds were identified, enabling the implementation of the required redundancy architecture that forms the foundation of a highly available infrastructure.
Migration Support and Business Continuity
The migration of hardware into the new cabinets was carried out within a carefully planned maintenance window without impacting operational services. EGAL provided on-site technical equipment, spare components and expert support, enabling rapid resolution of unforeseen challenges and ensuring a smooth migration process.
Preparedness for Future Technology Requirements
Panduit infrastructure is designed to support high power densities and modern data workloads, including AI applications. The connectivity infrastructure supports the latest generations of fiber optic technologies and enables future capacity expansion without major modifications to the existing environment.
Modular Design for Long-Term Growth
The selected solution enables gradual infrastructure upgrades according to future requirements. The data center is currently optimized for efficient air cooling while remaining fully prepared for the future adoption of advanced cooling technologies, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling.
Advanced Infrastructure Monitoring
Panduit intelligent PDUs provide monitoring of power consumption, electrical loads and environmental conditions at the cabinet level. Integration with the monitoring platform provides enhanced visibility of infrastructure performance and faster response to operational anomalies.
Result: Infrastructure Designed for the Next 15 Years
The Informatika d.o.o. data center modernization project represents a best-practice example of a comprehensive strategic approach. The project was not merely an equipment replacement initiative; it delivered an infrastructure platform designed for future growth while maintaining uninterrupted business operations throughout the entire implementation process.
The final result is one of the most advanced data center environments in the region. Today, the renovated facility represents a modern, redundant and modular environment designed to support the critical information systems of Slovenia’s energy infrastructure over the long term.
- High reliability: The data center now meets the requirements for Tier III availability.
- Technology longevity: The modular architecture provides readiness for future technology developments and AI requirements for the next 10 to 15 years.
- Comprehensive security: The modernized physical infrastructure is closely integrated with the Security Operations Center (SOC), providing proactive cyber protection for critical infrastructure.
- Seamless execution: The entire renovation and migration process was completed without any unplanned service interruptions.
The Role of EGAL d.o.o.
EGAL participated in the project as the technology partner for Panduit solutions, providing design support for key infrastructure elements, equipment supply, migration expertise and assistance in implementing the redundant architecture.
Through a combination of technical expertise, logistics support and close collaboration with the customer, the project was completed without unplanned service disruptions.
