How to Quickly Find the Right Cable in a Network Infrastructure

Tracing cables in active and inactive networks with the Klein Tools VDV500-920

When troubleshooting a network, it is not always enough to determine what is happening at the Ethernet port. Sometimes the next question is much more practical: where does this cable actually go?

A telecommunications room or network cabinet can contain dozens or even hundreds of terminated data connections. If cables are correctly labelled and documentation is up to date, identifying an individual connection is relatively straightforward. In practice, however, labels may be missing, documentation is not always current, and existing infrastructure may have undergone multiple changes over the years.

Manually checking connections can be time-consuming, particularly when working with large cable bundles, switches, patch panels and terminal blocks.

The Klein Tools VDV500-920 Digital Tone and Probe Set is designed for locating, identifying and tracing cables and wires. It combines digital and analog toning and enables technicians to work in both active and inactive networks.

Digital Tone Generator and Digital Tracing Probe in One Set

The VDV500-920 consists of two primary devices: the VDV500-163 Digital Tone Generator and the VDV500-223 Digital Tracing Probe.

The Digital Tone Generator sends a signal through the cable being traced, while the Digital Tracing Probe detects the signal and helps the technician follow the cable and identify the correct connection among other cables.

The set also includes test leads, a carrying pouch and all required batteries, making it ready for use in the field.

Trace Cables in Active Networks

One of the key advantages of the VDV500-920 is its digital tracing mode.

It enables data cables to be located and traced in active networks. A cable can remain connected to a switch or router and does not need to be disconnected before tracing.

This is particularly useful when troubleshooting or working with existing network infrastructure, where unnecessary disruption to an operational network should be avoided.

The system helps technicians locate network cables more efficiently within cable bundles and at switches, patch panels and terminal blocks.

Digital and Analog Toning in One System

The VDV500-920 combines digital and analog toning in a single system.

Digital mode is primarily designed for locating and tracing data cables in active networks.

Analog mode enables individual wire pairs to be isolated and supports tracing of data, voice, video and audio cables.

Depending on the infrastructure and the task at hand, the technician can select the appropriate mode – from tracing a data cable in an active network to more precisely identifying an individual wire pair.

From a Cable Bundle to the Right Connection

When working with a large number of cables, it is important to narrow down the search area quickly and then accurately identify the correct connection.

The VDV500-223 Digital Tracing Probe features a sensitive, non-metallic conductive tip and an audible output with adjustable volume. The technician can adjust the signal volume while tracing to help identify the target cable.

The built-in 60 Hz filter helps reduce electrical interference and provides clearer detection of the tracing signal.

For work inside network cabinets and other poorly lit areas, the Digital Tracing Probe features an integrated worklight. A 3.5 mm headphone jack is also available for use in noisy environments.

The probe tip is replaceable, while the twist-and-lock design enables quick, tool-free replacement.

Pin-to-Pin Wire Map Testing

The VDV500-920 is not limited to locating and tracing cables.

The set also supports pin-to-pin wire map testing. This enables technicians to verify connections between individual pins and detect the presence of a cable shield.

In this way, the wiring configuration can be checked and faults in terminated cable connections can be identified.

The VDV500-163 Digital Tone Generator also supports continuity and polarity testing. Results are displayed using clearly labelled LED indicators.

The integrated RJ45 port enables connection and testing of cables terminated with RJ45, RJ11 and RJ12 connectors.

Connecting to Terminated and Unterminated Wires

Not all cable connections encountered in the field are already terminated with a connector.

In addition to the RJ45 port, the VDV500-163 Digital Tone Generator includes test leads with robust Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips.

The specially designed contact surface provides a secure grip and reliable connection to the wire. This allows the tracing signal to be applied to unterminated wires and connections without an installed connector.

This extends the use of the set beyond troubleshooting terminated network connections to cable installation, maintenance and troubleshooting across different types of cabling infrastructure.

When You Need to Quickly Find Where a Cable Goes

Network troubleshooting often starts at the Ethernet port. Tools such as netool.io Pro2 and netool.io Lite help determine what is actually happening on the connection – from switch and VLAN information to network configuration and connectivity.

When the next task is to determine where a specific cable physically goes, a tool for tracing the connection through the existing infrastructure is required.

The Klein Tools VDV500-920 combines digital and analog toning and enables data cables to be traced even in active networks, without first disconnecting the cable from a switch or router.

Less guesswork, less manual connection checking and faster identification of the correct cable – directly in the field.
