Klein Tools in the world of measurement technology
Klein Tools is a renowned brand with a long tradition, known for its power and hand tools that provide professionals with reliable and robust solutions. Their line of measurement equipment, which includes multimeters and clamp meters, is designed for use in demanding conditions where there are frequent falls, mechanical stress, and high safety requirements.
Multimeters measure various electrical quantities such as voltage, current, resistance, frequency, and temperature. Clamp meters allow current to be measured without interrupting the conductors, as the measuring “jaw” is simply placed around the conductor.
We have written this article to help you decide which measurement tool is best suited to meet your requirements. We present some of the best-selling models of multimeters and clamp meters and provide a comparison between them. We paid special attention to important features such as quality construction, fall protection, reliable components, and specific functions such as TRMS, LoZ, or dual display—features that made Klein Tools products stand out.

| Standard CAT Safety Rating | CAT III 600 V | CAT III 600 V | CAT IV 600 V / CAT III 1000 V |
Interpretation and application:
- The MM420 model is the basic TRMS version with all standard measurement functions, suitable for everyday use where higher voltages are not required.
• The MM450 is a slim, thinner version, which makes it easier to handle and more compact in design, while still offering all the standard functions. It is ideal when you need a handy multimeter that is easy to carry around, without having to compromise on basic measuring functions.
• The MM720 upgrades functionality with the ability to measure up to 1000 V, a higher resistance measurement range, and the inclusion of a LoZ (Low Impedance) function that helps identify “phantom” voltages and eliminate interference. Due to its higher safety rating (CAT IV / CAT III), this model is more suitable for industrial use, demanding applications, and higher voltages.
To sum up: the MM720 is the “most powerful” of the trio (greater ranges, LoZ function), the MM450 is the most compact, and the MM420 is just right for general use.

Interpretation and application :
- The CL490 is an excellent choice for a variety of tasks where 400 A is sufficient. Its dual display is an advantage, especially when visibility is limited (e.g., in cabinets).
- The CL710 offers a higher current range (600 A) in TRMS design, suitable for medium current applications where you need a larger reserve.
- The CL900 is a high-performance model, suitable for applications with very high currents (e.g., regenerative units, large motors), more demanding conditions, and more critical safety requirements.

Final recommendations and advice
- Choice based on measurement range
If the maximum you will be measuring does not exceed 600 V or 400–600 A, the MM420 / MM450 or CL490 / CL710 models are perfectly adequate in most cases. However, if you are entering an industrial field where currents above 1000 A or operating voltages higher than this are common, the MM720 and CL900 are safer choices.
- LoZ (Low Impedance) function
The LoZ function is very useful for eliminating interference and “phantom” voltages, especially in industrial or electrical installation work, where apparent “voltages” are caused by capacitive effects or electromagnetic interference between parallel conductors. This function is included in the MM720 and CL900 models.
- Durability and safety
All models are designed to protect against drops (up to 2 m) and have the appropriate safety certifications. Nevertheless, when working in demanding conditions, always use protective measures and follow the recommendations regarding the category (CAT).
- Practical advantages
- The dual display on the CL490 is a practical solution when you need to monitor two parameters simultaneously or are working in confined spaces.
- The slim design of the MM450 makes it a more portable and compact measuring device while retaining all the necessary functions.
- The Inrush function of the CL900 allows accurate monitoring of starting currents in motors and transformers.
